Cutting mats are one of the most frequently used items of all of your quilting equipment
With a little bit of care:
- your cutting mat will help you to accurately cut your fabric and blocks (one of my Golden Rules!)
- you can prolong the life of your cutting mat
- you can save on replacement costs
My recommendations for cutting mat care:
Do
Do not
- Store your mat flat
- Clean your mat with soapy water (I use dishwashing liquid), lightly scrub with a soft brush, rinse well and dry flat
- Only use rotary cutters on your cutting mat
- Use your cutting mat for fabric only
- Follow the manufacturer's care instructions
- Roll or fold your cutting mat for transport or storage
- Leave your cutting mat in a hot car
- Use craft knives (for example, X-Acto knives) or box cutting knives (for example, Stanley knives) on your cutting mat
- Use your cutting mat as a glueing surface
My cutting replacement recommendations
To minimise the risk of affecting your accurate cutting, I replace my cutting mat once it is worn or damaged
All of my recommendations are based on my experience and preferences
