The problem that I am trying to solve
After I complete a project, I organise leftover scraps (or my preferred term – Treasures) as set out in the table below
This method gives me much less of an ‘uncontrolled catastrophic mess’ compared to just putting everything into a big container to be sorted out ‘later’
My recommendation
This is how I sort and store my treasures:
Category | Size or shape | My sorting solution |
|---|---|---|
Pieces LARGER than Fat 8th | Large pieces | Store with yardage stash |
Pieces LARGER than Fat 8th | Fat quarters | Store in a box, sorted by colour or style For example: 'blues' or '1930s fabrics' |
Pieces LARGER than Fat 8th | Fat 8ths | Store in a box, sorted by colour or style For example: 'blues' or '1930s fabrics' |
Pieces SMALLER than Fat 8th | 10" squares | Store with layer cakes |
Pieces SMALLER than Fat 8th | 5" squares | Store with charm squares |
Pieces SMALLER than Fat 8th | Smaller pieces | Sort into the following categories (I use seperate containers for each category):

Pieces SMALLER than Fat 8th | Shapes | If I have a template that I am using for a scrap quilt (for example, 3" hexagon or tumbler), I trim my Treasures into that shape and store them in the box that I am using for that quilt |
