How I manage my scraps

The problem that I am trying to solve

After I complete a project, I organise leftover scraps (or my preferred term – Treasures) as set out in the table below

This method gives me much less of an ‘uncontrolled catastrophic mess’ compared to just putting everything into a big container to be sorted out ‘later’

My recommendation

This is how I sort and store my treasures:

Category

Size or shape

My sorting solution

Pieces LARGER than Fat 8th

Large pieces

Store with yardage stash

Pieces LARGER than Fat 8th

Fat quarters

Store in a box, sorted by colour or style

For example: 'blues' or '1930s fabrics'

Fat 8ths

For example: 'blues' or '1930s fabrics'

Pieces SMALLER than Fat 8th

10" squares

Store with layer cakes

5" squares

Smaller pieces

Sort into the following categories (I use seperate containers for each category):

  • 5" strips
  • 5" squares
  • 4" strips
  • 4" squares
  • 2 1/2" strips
  • 2 1/2" squares
  • 1 1/2" strips
  • 1 1/2" squares
  • strings (uneven strips, for example, long sides are not parallel)
  • crumbs (all of the left over odd shapes)

Shapes

If I have a template that I am using for a scrap quilt (for example, 3" hexagon or tumbler), I trim my Treasures into that shape and store them in the box that I am using for that quilt
