The problem that I am trying solve
Acrylic templates and rulers can be very slippery unless there is some type of textured surface incorporated at manufacture or added by the user (for example, ‘Creative Grids’ have built in grip on their templates and are very good to use)
Slippery rulers and templates can make it very difficult to cut accurately – Cut Accurately is one of my Golden Rules
My recommendation
I use medical tape (the type used to secure bandages) because it:
- provides effective grip
- is inexpensive
- is readily available (I get mine from my local pharmacy or chemist)
- is available in different widths
- it has a low profile and does not interfere with my cutting
- is a little bit stretchy and crepey
I attach small strips of medical tape to the underside of my templates and rulers, making sure not to block or obscure my view of any markings on my rulers or templates (this is rarely a problem though)
Other useful non-slip products
Other products that are available from quilt and sewing shops (probably others as well) include:
- clear grip
- sandpaper dots
When choosing your preferred product, I recommend products with the the following features:
- low profile to minimise the risk of catching on the fabric
- does not interfere with your template and ruler storage system
All of my recommendations are based on my experience and preferences
